ECU mapping is about adjusting the cars standard computer (DME) to allow the car to deliver more power and torque. The actual process of remapping a cars ECU is quite straight forward, we use a laptop or a handheld device called a Bluefin to update the cars code with an enhanced version where boost, fueling, ignition timing as well as a whole host of other changes are made to the ECU to give more power and greater fuel economy. The actual process takes around 20 minutes. However the real skill comes in the developing of the map to suit the car taking into account any issues such as oil temperature, intake temperature, gearbox torque limits etc, this design process takes many months of road and track testing.

Our stage 1 ECU mapping is designed to run on the standard cars mechanicals, it can run on whatever grade of fuel you chose (although you will get much better power and fuel economy if you run decent high octane fuel such as Shell V-Power) and the map parameters are designed not to put any greater stress on the engine or turbo or gearbox. Power, torque and fuel economy are all increased.

You can choose how the map is installed, via a laptop or via the hand held Bluefin unit (more on the Bluefin here), the Bluefin enables you to remove and re-install the map at your convenience like and on/off switch as well as clear fault codes etc, it also enables the remote update of free map upgrades as we develop them so its a worthwhile device to have.

The maps themselves are developed by us in partnership with our mapping partner – Superchips. Our relationship with Superchips goes back almost a decade, for that time we have jointly developed a range of ECU maps for BMW’s and Vauxhalls we both share a great amount of pride in.  The mapping process here takes 3-4 hours, firstly we undertake a full diagnostic check of your car complete with a full DME update (we have the same systems and updates as your BMW dealership) and we run the car on our state of the art chassis dyno. We are relatively unique in 335 tuning in that our dyno has a fan set up big enough to keep the engine cool – an Achilles heel on the 335. After full diagnostic checks are complete we map the car and then run the car again, fine tuning the map to suit your particular car, all cars are different to some extent so this customisation ensure the best ECU file for your car. 335i Stage 1 Remap: £445

The 335 gets hot so all of our different stages of power upgrades carefully plan for this. The standard cars exhaust is (even by BMW standard) pretty poor, it isn’t able to move the airflow from the engine fast enough so even if you run more boost you end up just creating more heat which equals less power and potential engine damage. We have an equally long history with Akrapovic and Supersprint and have developed the perfect exhaust system for the car.

Available in catback and full system options the Akaprovic and Supersprint exhausts both allows more boost to be used in the mapping without the resulting heat build up in the engine so more power is generated. There is also the option of the Supersprint exhaust and the Akrapovich titanium option, take your pick.

The addition of the exhaust allows extra airflow from the engine so we can run a higher stage map with more power. All the exhaust systems offer a huge weight saving over standard and sound fantastic, the Supersprint a higher pitch wail and the Akrapovic a bit of both (it's titanium so sounds very different).

Again its heat which dictates the next upgrade, the 335 gets hot and higher heat equals less power, this is especially important with forced induction cars and the higher intake temperatures that they generate. Intake temperature relates to the temperature of the air actually used by the engine in combustion, the higher the temperature this is the less oxygen the air can carry so the smaller the explosion when ignited – less power. By upgrading the cars intercooler with an uprated item we can dramatically drop the intake temperature down meaning more power and less stress for the engine.

The larger size and more efficient airflow combine to drop the intake temps down by nearly 70% - huge and allows us to run a higher specification map meaning more power. In addition to the larger intercooler we also upgrade the cars oil cooler to a larger motorsport item, oil temperature is an issue for the 335 so keeping it down both allows more power and keeps the engine safe.
