The Astra G is a lighter chassis than the newer H (and VXR) so suffers less from poor braking and fade with prolonged heavy use. However, whenever you're upgrading the power and handling of a car its essential to look at how you use the brakes and their ability to stand up to increased use, this is especially important if you wish to use the car on track.

Changing pads, hoses and fluid is one thing but for a complete transformation of braking you need to replace the calipers and increase the size of the disks. Replacing the disks on their own can have an incremental increase in power and feel but by retaining the existing calipers that increase will always be limited. Fortunately Vauxhall agrees and as part of the tuning packages offered for the VXR Astra (which is heavier so needs upgraded brakes for even minor levels of tuning) they worked closely with AP Racing to develop the VXR upgrade kit.
 AP Racing Kit Fitted  AP Racing & Alcon Big Brake Kits  Alcon Kit Fitted This VXR kit comprises a larger 343mm larger disk, mounted onto a separate aluminium bell with a larger four piston caliper offering double the pad/caliper interface size. The kits come complete with braided hoses, AP Racing dot 5.1 brake fluid and a choice of road or track specific pads from Ferrodo or Pagid racing. If you're planning on taking your car on track then this kit is essential. The kits are available in red or blue. |
