The Astra G GSI, VX220 Turbo and Astra VXR all share the same basic engine. The VXR (Astra H) has quite a few engine internal changes and a different turbo but all three have similar ECU's and identical basic engine configurations. So it'd be a bit daft of us to spend years perfecting the VX220 Turbo tuning, then spend just as long developing the VXR model and ignore the Astra G wouldn't it?
Well we haven't so we've developed a whole range of Astra G tuning packages so that owners of these models can have the same level of tuning and enhancement as the others. All of our remapping work is customised to the car and fine-tuned to whatever modifications you may have. The tuning packages are available for coupe or hatch, GSI and SRI and are especially suitable for the 888 (we used one as one of the development cars).

The Astra G doesn't suffer from the same level of torque steer as the VXR. So on the Stage 1 ECU remap we concentrate on getting more power whilst at the same time keeping it useable. Heat (whilst still an issue) is less of a problem on the G due to its roomier engine bay so we can run reasonably aggressive maps without cooking anything. However we specialise on driveable power not just numbers, so it's an enhancement to the experience and not just boost and fuel chucked in to get power up. Your car under goes a thorough check with official Vauxhall diagnostic equipment before we even start on any remapping and the map can be custom designed for the car on our rolling road should you require. Your car is also test driven after all the work has been completed to ensure it meets with our high standards before we pass it back. Our money back guaranty applies to all our work, if you don't like it, then you don't pay - simple. The Turbo-back exhaust system comprises of a Pre-Cat replacement pipe, a 200 cell race cat (using a proper motor-sport Catalyst) a performance centre section and a performance rear silencer. Performance gains are noticeable at about an extra 8-10bhp just for the exhaust. (Our exhaust development team are currently researching and developing an exhaust system for this model. As soon as progress is made we will update the website and keep you informed)
The heat reducing attributes of the sports exhaust allow us to run a more aggressive ECU remap for the car allowing us to generate even more power whilst still retaining 100% reliability and longevity for the engine. The gains are quite impressive with mid-range especially a huge improvement in bhp and torque. It is certainly possible to save some costs and fit just the precat replacement pipe only and keep the standard cat in place but we've found that this does limit the gains that the full system provides, an exhaust is really only a method to move gases from A to B so removing a restriction from one part simply moves the weakest point to the next most restrictive so we recommend the full system. |

The addition of the front mount intercooler has a tremendous effect on air intake temperatures - the bane of turbo charged cars. Whilst the standard intercooler is quite effective at normal levels of tune by adding extra power the car needs to pay extra attention to increases in air intake temperatures. No cutting to the bodywork is required at all so it can be easily uninstalled if required and comes complete with its own slimline fan and wiring.
Obviously the Power Pack 3 includes the full Thorney Motorsport exhaust system (including precat pipe and sports cat) and the ECU remap custom tuned to the car with the extra modifications added. With the addition of the cooler air provided by the front mount intercooler we can be more aggressive on the map with greater boost and fueling.

Pretty much the ultimate set up for the Astra G, as well as the full Thorney Motorsport exhaust system and extra cooling from the Pace front mount intercooler we change the turbocharger to the same unit from the Astra VXR. This unit is essentially a hybrid version of the standard Astra G unit but with uprated internals and actuator so can handle significantly higher levels of peak and held boost. We recommend this unit above all others for this level of tune.
As with all our ECU maps (regardless of level) the ECU is custom tuned to suit the vehicle so perfect power delivery is achieved with a smooth delivery throughout the range. The use of the VXR turbo allows us to up the boost on the ECU map by another 2psi and hold this boost for longer in the rev range without reducing any longevity.
Thorney Motorsport - Astra G 2.0 Turbo Stage 5 Upgrade

After nearly 2 years of testing and development we are ready to release our Astra Stage 5 conversion. As with all power upgrades each stage of tuning simply exposes the next weakest link in the chain. With stage 1 we upgrade the ECU but cant go any further as the exhaust restricts power, with stage 2 we go further but heat is the limiter so we upgrade the intercooler etc. With stage 4 we finally replace everything on the engine that needs upgrading to run much higher power. However, with the LEH bottom end (pistons, rods) really being unable to cope long term with more than 340bhp we limit the power from the stage 5 to under this level, but it does mean if you replace the bottom end (stage 5) then 380bhp is yours for the taking. In other words this is a stage 5 conversion but power limited to 330bhp to protect the standard bottom end.

At the heart of this conversion is the custom turbo and equal length manifold design. The manifold is built by the same company that supplied Red Bull Racings F1 manifolds so the quality of construction is exemplary, it is a true equal length which is crucial in maximising airflow from the larger turbo, no point creating power via boost if its wasted in blocked airflow. The turbo itself is a Garrett GT28 unit with a variety of changes made to TMS specifications, the turbo is rated to 450bhp maximum so we have designed the unit to generate maximum power and torque but well inside its limits.
We recommend that your car have an LSD fitted as well as a big brake upgrade (either our own Alcon kit of AP Racing) as a minimum but it's not compulsory. The standard TMS/Vauxhall warranty applies, however there is only a 12 months warranty on the turbo which is standard Garrett terms. The conversion can only be undertaken at our Milton Keynes HQ as extensive dyno time is needed during installation.
